Acoustic Or Soundproof Insulation Batts

Acoustic insulation batts are designed to absorb the sounds effectively and reduce the noise transfer between rooms. This acoustic insulation comes in the form of fibre batts with a higher density than the normal thermal insulation batts to enhance the soundproofing as much as 75% of the sound.

Continuous sound may result in to harsh side effects such as disrupted sleep patterns, elevated stress levels and reduced life quality. If you reside or work near a high way or in an industrial area, you may have certainly experienced the above. So installing the sound screen batts to your home or building would be the most pertinent solution to avoid the continuous sound.

where to use acoustic insulation batts

In Australia, the most common acoustic insulation batts are made from Glasswool or polyester fibres to be primarily used in ceilings, walls and underfloor of a house. Let’s see how to use the soundproof insulation batts in ceilings, walls and underfloor.

sound proof walls insulation | sound insulation | acoustic insulation Ceilings – it is proven that approximately 35% of the house hold heat is escaped through the ceiling. So the easiest way to prevent this is installing thermal insulation, but if you are living near by a busy highway or in an industrial area, installing acoustic insulation batts will be the most appropriate insulation option to build a barrier to the heat loss and continuous noise.

Walls – it is highly recommended to soundproof the internal and external wall of a house for a comfortable living. The internal walls of bathrooms and bed rooms are generally required a medium level of soundproofing where as the media rooms, studios and laundries need high level of soundproofing.

Between Floors- Generally ground floor doesn’t require acoustic insulation to be installed. But it is highly recommended to install acoustic insulation batts between the floors of multi storey homes or buildings to get a much quieter and comfortable living space or office environment.

How to choose and How to install sound insulation correctly

When choosing the right acoustic insulation product for your project, have to e considerate few facts as below.

Determine the required batts size – considering the cavity depth and stud width, you have to choose the right acoustic batt insulation. Stud width is usually 430mm, 580mm or 600mm and cavity depth can be anything between 50mm to several hundred of millimeters.

Determine the uppermost density – a better soundproofing can be gained through an uppermost density. So when choosing the acoustic insulation choose maximum mass batt, which will fit into your cavity while considering your budget as well. Most common densities in Australia are 11kg/m3, 14kg/m3, 20kg/m3 and 25kg/m3. But to compare the soundproofing performance, you need to divide the density by 100 and multiply by thickness. Then whichever the higher is best in soundproofing.

Determine the preferred material – as acoustic performance of the insulation batt is depend on the density and thickness there is no prominent material for better soundproofing. So this can be determine as per to the personal preference and budget and you can choose from glasswool and polyester.

Installing acoustic insulation batts is quite easy process, but you have to bear some important facts in your mind to get the intended performance of them.

You have to ensure that every gap of the cavity is full as if there is any, sound will escape from it and will lessen the acoustic performance. Then install the acoustic insulation between the studs/joists and cover with a layer of plasterboards using resilient mount to mount the plasterboard which will reduce the amount of escaping noise.
