Installation of Roof Insulation – A Guide to proper Installation

A simple and effective way to prevent heat in your domicile. Nowadays, Insulation is essential for maintaining a comfortable temperature. Installation of roof insulation could save you similar amounts on your heating bills. Our guide makes it easy to find out how to insulate your roof and save money on energy bills. We’ll show you how to insulate several areas around the home with insulation: Walls, attics.

How to Estimate Insulation needed

Before the energy savings, find out how much material is needed to cover each surface of the residence. All the measurement parts should be taken carefully, ensure that you have enough insulation on hand while installation.
  1. Draw a rough outline of your residence walls with a pencil in a white paper. Make sure it consists of all interior and exterior walls. Measure the dimensions and add in the rough outline.
  2. By use of a tape, measure the length and height of the wall. Multiply the two measurements to determine the source footage of the wall. Write the area and wall height on the rough outline next to the corresponding wall.
  3. Measure the inside width and depth of one stud cavity of the same wall. Make a note of both measurements below the wall area.
  4. Move around the house by determining the area, depth, width of each house wall. Keep the dimensions next to each wall.
  5. Add the area of each wall that has the same width and depth. In case if you’re estimating batt insulation includes height to cut it length.
  6. Divide the total square footage for each insulation size by square footage supplied in a package in of insulation to determine the number of insulation bundles needed to insulate the walls of your house.
  7. Depth of roof insulation for a loft is 250 to 270 mm.
According to cost there are a several options available for roof insulation, some of which are relatively inexpensive. Energy- efficiency grants are available for cold loft roof insulation.

Warm roof solutions are generally expensive, but they can provide a greater level of cooler temperature. For warm roof solution you need to install in the plane of roof pitch, below the sloping roof. It will help to avoid roof becoming excessively hot in summer or cold in winter, and will reduce heat losses from your roof. Important note to remember is need for the ventilation immediately below the roof tiles.

Insulation Installation

Depending upon the type of insulation you use and how it’s applied. Now where the insulation should be installed and the different types of insulation materials, the next step is to learn where in your new home the different materials should be installed. This section provides you a detailed guide on” How to install insulation”. It covers specific information on installation details.

Remember: The idea of your insulation system is to create a “building envelope,” which means several types of insulation may be used in a given area. A perfect insulated home means increase in comfort and less in heating bills. If you follow the safety and installation instructions as per mentioned, putting in your own insulation is actually a best straightforward DIY plan.

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, there are five types of the home that should be properly insulated. Doing this will help to maintain an energy-efficient home.

  1. The first area to insulate is the attic. Both fiberglass and cellulose are best for this.
  2. Walls- Both exterior and interior- are the next area to insulate in a home. Rigid boards works best on exterior walls, along with a vapor barrier
  3. The Third area that needs proper insulation is the floors. Rigid foam boards and traditional fiberglass batts works best on the floor.
  4. The fourth area to insulate is crawl spaces. These are the raised areas in the house where your house building team can gain access. Fiberglass insulation is usually used in this area, foam can be used as well
  5. The fifth are to insulate is the basement for those of you who have one. Rigid boards and fiberglass work best.

Install Batt Insulation in Ceilings with Attics:

  1. Verify insulation material with correct width and R – values for this location (R- Ratings are basically a measure of insulation capability. If you live in South Island or around central north Island building regulations require higher R- rated insulation).
  2. Friction fit insulation between and parallel to standard and narrow attic framing members
  3. Ensure insulation extends to outside edge of the exterior top plates and is flush against ventilation dams.
  4. Ends of insulation are butted together and flush to underside of framing.
  5. When using Kraft-faced batts: Fasten Kraft face tabs of insulation to the bottom side of framing members.
  6. While using vapor retarder and unfaced batts: Fasten vapor retarder to bottom side of framing once batts are installed. Overlap seems at least 2 inches.
  7. In this attic, install a card that indicates attic insulation levels in the house to meet code requirements.

Batt Insulation Installation Techniques – Ceilings without Attics

  1. Verify insulation material with correct width and R-value for the location.
  2. Friction fit insulation between and parallel to the attic framing members.
  3. Ensure insulation extends to the outside edge of the exterior top plates and to the peak of the cathedral ceiling.
  4. Ensures ends of insulation are butted together and flush to bottom side of framing.
  5. While using Kraft-faced batts: Fasten Kraft face tabs of insulation to the bottom side of framing members.
  6. By using vapor retarder with unfaced batts: Faced vapor retarder to bottom side of framing members once batts are installed.

Batt Insulation Installation to Roof Deck

  1. Verify insulation material with correct width and R- Value for location.
  2. Friction fit insulation between and parallel to the attic framing members.
  3. Ensure attic insulation extends to the outside edge of the exterior top plates and to the peak of the cathedral ceiling.
  4. Ensure ends of attic insulation are butted together and flush to underside of framing.
